Darynda Jones is the author of eleven books in the Charley Davidson series and a young adult series about a Grim Reaper. Her books easily cross the aisle between urban fantasy and romance readers and she has a solid fanbase in both spaces.
What inspired you to write?
No idea! I started "writing" when I was five, even before I could actually read or write. I'd scribble on paper or even in the dirt and pretend I was writing a story. I've always been a daydreamer. That had a huge influence on my life. Now everything inspires me. Books, music, movies, doing the laundry. Seriously, I can turn anything into a story. Go ahead! Try me! :)
How do you relate to your kickass, snarky heroine, Charley Davidson?
While I'm not nearly as funny as she is, I relate mostly to her snarkiness. I wish I could say half the stuff she does and get away with it. I would inevitably just offend and alienate those around me. Then I would be lonely.
What kind of fantastical or supernatural being have you not written that you'd love to share with the world?
Well, I have actually written them: Hellhounds. I just want to write them into a book unto themselves and have a female protagonist accidentally become one. Oops!
What does the day-to-day business of being a writer actually look like for you?
Sadly, it's mostly business. It's answering emails, doing interviews, networking... all the stuff I do when I'm not actually writing. I've vowed that 2017 is going to be the year I actually get my act together and write more every single day. Fingers crossed!
What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Other than the usual read everything and write everyday, I'd say simply finish the book. Period. Once you've done that, write another one. Then another. If you've written three manuscripts and you still love it with a fiery passion, this might just be the career for you. Don't give up!
What are you working on right now?
The Trouble with Twelfth Grave, the 12th in the Charley Davidson series.
Where can we buy your books?
Pretty much anywhere and in any format! They are online and in brick and mortar stores. I highly recommend listening to them, too. Our narrator, the lovely Lorelei King, is beyond amazing.
Thank you so much for having me! XOX! ~D~
