The story of my late daughter's and husband's struggles with serious mental illness and substance abuse steered me toward an Ed. S. degree in Special Education- gifted, emotional and learning different at the U of A. I became an independent educational consultant especially for 'troubled' youth and adults, and assessed programs for families nationally as well as consulted. In Tucson, I helped found NAMISA (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of S. AZ) in '83, was Principal of the Green Fields School during the '80's and consulted for 35 years.
Our family of four and a dog, moved from the East in '71, where I was involved in social service on many levels. At Bryn Mawr. I got a BA in History, and at the U Penn, an MS in Secondary Education. I have recently won a national service award and the NAMISA Book award for the 'best mental health book of 2016'. All the proceeds of the sale of "House of Heart" go to non-profit institutions who helped our family.
