Juana Martinez-Neal

Juana Martinez-Neal is a mixed media, traditional artist born in Lima, the capital of Peru. She is the illustrator of "La Madre Goose" and "La Princesa and the Pea" (forthcoming from Putnam), both written by Susan Middleton Elya. Additionally, Juana illustrating "Swashby and the Sea" (forthcoming from HMH) written by Beth Ferry. Her debut picture book as author-illustrator, "Alma", will be published by Candlewick Press in Spring 2018.

Juana was named to the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) Illustration Honor list in 2014 and awarded the SCBWI Portfolio Showcase Grand Prize in 2012. Juana lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with her family.

Creating Abecedario Cards: A Drawing Workshop for Ages 4-9
Have fun making your own bilingual ABC cards by drawing your favorite animals and objects from "La Madre Goose." Juana will show you how she made the illustrations in her new book and invite you to make abecedario cards that you can take with you.

Where are we? Latinos in Children's Books
Four Latino/a authors will share their perspectives on the books currently being published that feature Latinos as well as what is missing. The lack of diversity in children's books is a frequent critique and the growing population of Latinos indicates a tremendous need for books with Latino content.
