Michael McGarrity is a New Mexican author and former law enforcement officer. He has written a dozen crime-suspense novels about New Mexico. As deputy sheriff of Santa Fe County, he founded their Sex Crimes Unit.

McGarrity has a B.A. in English and Psychology from San Jose State University, a master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of Iowa, and is a graduate of the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy. In addition to law enforcement work, he has been an investigator and caseworker for the New Mexico Public Defender's Office. He worked on rehabilitating prison programs after the New Mexico State Penitentiary riot in 1980. That year he was recognized by his peers as the New Mexico Social Worker of the Year.

McGarrity has taught at several colleges and universities as well as the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy. As a social worker, he published a number of articles in professional journals on a wide range of topics, ranging from therapy programs for children, to program assessment and evaluation, and drug treatment interventions.

With the publication of his novel "Tularosa" in 1996, McGarrity turned to writing full time. A number of McGarrity’s best selling novels have been nominated for various awards, and in 2004 he received the New Mexico Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts -- Literature. In May 2015, he will receive the Frank Waters Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature.

He has been instrumental in establishing the Hillerman-McGarrity Creative Writing Scholarship at the University of New Mexico, the Richard Bradford Memorial Creative Writing Scholarship at the Santa Fe Community College, and the N. Scott Momaday Creative Writing Scholarship at the Institute of American Indian Arts.

Currently, he is writing a historical trilogy about the Kerney Family set in New Mexico during the years1875 to the end of the Vietnam Conflict. The first two novels,"Hard Country" (2012) and "Backlands" (2014) were published to rave reviews. "The Last Ranch" due out in June 2016, will complete the trilogy..
