Tani D. Sanchez

Friends of the Festival

Dr. Tani D. Sanchez, author of "Didn't Come From Nothing: An African American Story of Life," is an Associate professor of Africana Studies at the University of Arizona. She has an interest in racial representations in the media and in the study of African American history and culture. She has worked as a newspaper editor, radio news host and as a media information specialist. An Army veteran, she hosted a news program in Korea and worked in public affairs. Dr. Sanchez is also the first president of the Tucson Chapter Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. Her doctorate is in Comparative Cultural and Literary Studies; her master’s degree focused on visual culture/art history.

Dignity and Worth: Inside the Struggle to Reclaim the Past
Two authors discuss how marginalized populations are reclaiming their stories and pushing back against a society that affirms its cultural and spiritual self-worth by denying affirmation to others. Understanding that racial inequality results when a people’s history is hidden, Sanchez discusses years of academic research.
