Difficult Topics, Strong Emotions and the Power of Story

This session features children's books on difficult topics, such as bullying, climate change and school shootings, along with the ways in which these books can be used to talk about difficult or scary issues with children.

Christine Draper

Christine Draper is a former 5th and 7th-grade teacher and Associate Professor of Education. She now works as an Instructional Designer at Nevada State College supporting professors in course design. She has been a member of several national book award committees and is a firm believer in the power of children's and young adult literature and how powerful books can change and transform the readers' views, perspectives, and conceptional knowledge....

Marie LeJeune

Marie LeJeune is a Professor of Literacy Education at Western Oregon University where she teaches classes in children's literacy, literacy methods, and young adult literature. She has served on the Orbis Pictus Committee for honfiction literatyre for children, the Amelia Walden Award for Excellence in young adult fiction, and is currently a member of the Notable Books for Children Committee for the American Library Association's Library Services for Children....
