Deborah Marcero (she/her/hers)


Deborah Marcero is the author and illustrator of picture books, including "In a Jar," which was called stunning in a starred review from Kirkus Reviews and beguiling by The Wall Street Journal. Her novel, "Out of a Jar," was an Entertainment Weekly Best Book of the Year and an ALA Notable Children's Book. She also wrote and illustrated the picture book "My Heart Is a Compass" and the Haylee and Comet, emerging reader series. Her new picture book is "The Great Escape."

In this illustrator studio, Deborah Marcero will demonstrate her illustration process for "The Great Escape" and engage participants in moving from sketch to ink to watercolor. Marcero is also the author/illustrator of "Hope in a Jar" and "Out of a Jar."

Authors of picture books share their experiences and identify the strategies involved in writing the text for a picture book. Although picture books have a small number of words, writing brief but effective text can be difficult.
