Contest Entry Form

Eleventh Annual Young Authors Competition

We Are Looking For:

  • Original youth-initiated writing; not re-tellings of movies, TV shows, popular books, etc.
  • Stories and poems with compelling characters, satisfying development, vivid use of language, and distinctive style.
  • Stories and poems that show a unique point of view.
  • Open to youth preK through 12th grade residing in Southern Arizona.

Contest Rules:

  • Entries must be accompanied by entry form - either electronically submitted or hard-copy.
  • Please, no name on the story (judges prefer no identifying information on the work).
  • Maximum length 1,000 words (this limit will be strictly enforced).
  • Only single-author submissions.
  • Illustrations may be included.
  • Children may dictate their story to an adult.
  • Non-English text must include English translation.
  • One entry per youth, per category * story category - general fiction or historical fiction *poem category
  • Story or poem must be an original work of the author.
  • For residents of Southern Arizona.
  • Text must be written legibly or typed, single spaced.
  • All writing genres are eligible for consideration (general fiction, historical fiction, poetry; school reports are not eligible).
  • Stories related to topics involving the Southwest are of particular interest for the 2019 Festival writing competition; however, students are free to write on any topic.
  • Submissions must be received electronically, postmarked or hand-delivered by 5pm on Friday, December 21st, 2018.

Please have a parent / guardian read this: By entering your child's work in this competition, you agree to the writing competition rules and regulations. You also agree that the Tucson Festival of Books may use your child's name and submission in any activities related to the Festival. If the Tucson Festival of Books is unable to contact you or to receive signed acknowledgement, a different entry will be selected. The decisions of the judges are final. Sponsors are not responsible for lost, late, damaged, misdirected or illegible submissions.

Entries may be returned to the authors. Finalists in each of four age categories will be recognized on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at the Tucson Festival of Books. During the award ceremony, finalists will receive a certificate, a book including all winning entries and $100 in gift cards. The Young Author contest is sponsored by Altrusa International of Tucson, Inc. in partnership with the Tucson Festival of Books. The Young Poet contest is sponsored by The Arts Foundation for Tucson & Southern Arizona and The Community Foundation of Southern Arizona. These are not school district-sponsored events.
