Maria Goodavage

Author sponsored by Susan & Appy Chandler

Maria Goodavage is a three-time New York Times bestselling author of books about incredible, heroic working dogs: "Secret Service Dogs: The Heroes Who Protect the President of the United States" (2016, Dutton/Penguin), "Top Dog: The Story of Marine Hero Lucca," (2014, Dutton/Penguin), and "Soldier Dogs: The Untold Story of America's Canine Heroes" (2012 Dutton/Penguin). She has appeared on numerous national TV shows including "The Daily Show with John Stewart" and "Today."

Goodavage, a former USA Today reporter, has been writing about dogs since 1992, when she helped launch a nationwide series of canine guidebooks with her book, "The Dog Lover's Companion to the Bay Area." Her beloved 1,000-page book, "The Dog Lover's Companion to California," followed in 1995. Both books came out in seven editions before she left the series in 2011 to pursue her books on military and other dogs.

Goodavage lives in San Francisco with her family and yellow Lab, Gus, who is a living memorial to a fallen military dog and handler she wrote about in “Top Dog.”
