Debbie Weingarten

Friends of the Festival

Debbie Weingarten is a Tucson-based writer and editor. Her work has been featured in Guernica, the Guardian, Longreads, Vela, Rodale's Organic Life, Modern Farmer, Civil Eats, Aeon, The Development Set, The Establishment,, Mutha Magazine, Edible Baja Arizona, and others.

Her essay “The Mule Deer” was the nonfiction prize winner of the 2017 Tom Howard/John H. Reid Fiction & Essay Contest and was listed by Sun Dress Press as one of the 30 most transformative essays of 2016. She was also nominated for a Pushcart Prize and for inclusion in the Best of the Net Anthology for her piece "The Hunted." Weingarten's essays have been featured in the 2016 and 2017 Best of Food Writing anthologies. She has won several Arizona Press Club awards for her work on the environment, social issues, human interest pieces, and profile writing. Her fiction has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, featured in Dzanc Books' Best of the Web, and placed third in the Glimmer Train Press Very Short Fiction contest.

In addition to writing and editing, Debbie is a community organizer and local food activist. A former vegetable farmer, she is now the co-founder of the Farmer Education & Resource Network -- an organization focused on supporting southern Arizona's beginning and existing farmers. She serves on the City of Tucson’s Commission for Food Security, Heritage & Economy. She is a writing partner for The Female Farmer Project, where she documents the rise of women in agriculture.
