Tucson Festival of Books

Guy Porfirio

Guy Porfirio is an artist, author and storyteller. Porfirio grew up near Chicago, which may have nothing to do with his curious preference for deep-dish pizza, but everything to do with his unique voice and sheer wit. Porfirio lives in Arizona, the setting for his recent picture books, "My Grandma Lives in Arizona" and "Jump." Porfirio’s artwork has been featured in advertising, books, posters and murals. Porfirio claims drawing as his second language, and painting as pure heartfelt fun.

Illustrator Studio: Digital Painting and Visual Storytelling
This studio focuses on virtual storytelling through digital painting. Guy will show how he takes an idea from sketches to finished illustrations, using nothing but a computer. He will show images of his past work and talk about how he started using the computer for illustration. He will show images of the stages for his most recent book, play a video of himself painting on his studio computer, and do a short demonstration on his iPad. Guy Porfirio will demonstrate the way in which he engages in digital painting to create illustrations and his decision-making process to present ordinary scenarios in extraordinary ways.
