Elana K. Arnold is the award-winning author of many books for children and teens including "The House That Wasn't There," the Printz Honor winner "Damsel," the National Book Award finalist "What Girls Are Made Of" and the Global Read Aloud selection "A Boy Called Bat." Her new books are "The Blood Years" and "Harriet Tells the Truth." She is a member of the faculty at Hamline University's Master of Fine Arts in writing for children and young adults program and lives in Long Beach, Calif. with her husband, two children and a menagerie of animals.

Resilience Rising: Navigating Violence & Loss
Violence and loss can lead to despair, but can also build the resilience needed to not only survive but to grow in resistance and strength as a person. These YA novels go across time and place, with Elana Arnold's "The Blood Years" set during the Holocaust in Romania and David Bowles' "The Prince and the Coyote" set in 1418 among the Nahuatl in Mexico. Cherie Dimaline's "The Marrow Thieves" is a future dystopia of Indigenous peoples set in Canada.

The power and complications of truth-telling shines through in these books as characters pursue mysteries that reveal secrets and create change. Two cousins work to expose the misuse of power in their school, a girl moves from lies to truth, and a young wizard does his best to help others. They all struggle with whether truth is always good.
