Michael Sampson (he/him/his)


Michael Sampson taught kindergarten through fourth grade before meeting fellow literacy expert Bill Martin, Jr. at a conference in Tucson, Ariz., in 1978. They established a lifelong friendship and collaborated on many best-selling and award-winning books for children, including "Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3," "Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?," "Armadillo Antics," "Ten Little Squirrels," "Bing! Bang! Chugga! Beep!" and "All Kinds of Kids." Sampson often speaks at schools, book festivals and literacy conferences, where he is known for his high-energy, entertaining performances. Dr. Sampson is a Fulbright Scholar and a professor of literacy at St. John's University in New York City.

Supporting Young Readers with Rhythm and Rhyme
Picturebooks that integrate rhythm and rhyme provide the support needed by young readers to successfully engage in reading. Michael Sampson and Bill Martin Jr. collaborated to create picturebooks that invite children into a book, leading to a joyful, rather than painful, experience. Michael will share strategies that parents and educators can use with these books to support young children in a positive reading experience.

Every Word Counts: Authoring a Picturebook
Authors of picturebooks share their experiences and strategies in writing the text for a picturebook. Although picturebooks have a small number of words, writing brief but effective text can be difficult.
