Tucson Festival of Books

Sarah F Peterson

Sarah was a studio potter for 19 years and is well known for her signature trout majolica ceramics. However, her true love has always been watercolors, spending summers in Aspen, Colorado, at the Anderson Ranch under the tutelage of her mentor, Anstis B. Lundy. She has exhibited both her ceramics and watercolors in numerous shows in Colorado including Boulder, Denver and Aspen, as well out of her home state, in places as far as Ketchum, New York, Key West and San Francisco.

Her paintings show a unique use of watercolor, expressing the delicate and ethereal qualities of her subjects in vivid contrast with darkness. Her use of white on white in combination with intense textures is partly why her paintings are so unique. She says, “I look to the exquisiteness of peonies and magnolias and the rugged bravery of hollyhocks for confirmation that the Earth is still finding it in its heart to push up these miracles.”

Her book, "Six Legs," is the first time her work has been displayed in such a manner. Inspired by the playfulness and wonder of her grandson, this book looks to the six legged kingdom as a way to build a deeper relationship with the natural world. An honoring of sorts, "Six Legs" is not only dedicated to her grandson, but to the insects that in a certain way, have painted her.

This book is unique in that it falls somewhere between a childrens book and an art book found on a beautiful coffee table.

Sarah is delighted in being included at the Tuscon Festival of Books. Please stay tuned for more about watercolor insects and other art books in the works.  sarahfpeterson.com
