Humane Borders, Inc.

Humane Borders maintains a system of water stations in the Arizona Sonoran Desert on routes used by migrants making the journey on foot. Our primary mission is to save desperate people from death by dehydration and exposure and to create a just and humane environment in the borderlands. We seek to educate the public to raise awareness on the terrible reality that so many people die crossing the Arizona Sonoran Desert for lack of water.

Humane Borders partners with the Pima County Medical Examiners Office to map the locations of recovered human remains, and proceeding from this information, we maintain and update a searchable database formally known as the Arizona OpenGIS Initiative for Deceased Migrants, accessible on our website. Viewers may see the exact location where each migrant body has been found, along other information, such as the name and gender of the deceased (if known and if the family has been notified), date of discovery, and cause of death. We also seek out opportunities to speak to the students, church groups, and different secular organizations to raise awareness on migrant desert deaths.
