On October 23, 1983, the U.S. Marine Corps suffered its worst single-day loss of life since Iwo Jima when terrorists attacked their barracks in Beirut. 241 Marines died that day, and military historian James M. Scott says the memory of Beirut influences U.S. policy even today.
